Every time we stroll along those beautiful cities in Kyoto we grab something on the go. I noticed that what we call streetfood in Germany isn't neccessarily the same in Japan. There are few places that actually sell meals like burgers or fries on the street. All you can eat is a few snacks here and there, but eating on the street is rather an exception. Japanese people are crazy about "Mochi". It is a sweet made from rice cake that is steamed and filled with a sweet red bean paste. It's chewy and it doesn't have a taste until you bite through the center with the filling. In Japan they even have a word for chewy food and they would call it "mochi-mochi". In English we have "onomatopoeia" sounds like boom and pow, that express a sound that you cannot describe otherwise. Japanese would use words like mochi-mochi or mero-mero. It does sound a bit cuter than the English sounds.
This is a Kinako Mochi. Kinako is a powder that is made of soybean and the Mochi is coated in it. If you have one of these you might look a bit messy around your mouth because the powder will stick to your lips.
When you eat mochi please make sure you bite small chunks off. Otherwise if you swallow the whole thing you will eventually have a problem with this kind of food as it can stick to your throat if it's really big. I don't want to scare you so I'll just leave it like that.
Warabi Mochi, Kinako Mochi, Miatrashi Dango, Sakura Mochi..phew! I guess I'll stop here instead of throwing even more Japanese Mochi words at you. I can only recommend you to try and taste this sweet or snack because you can't eat something like this anywhere else but in Japan.
Please, please, please don't forget not to swallow the whole thing. I know, you're really smart but trust me there's nothing wiser than what is called: Experience
